WHAT:
The City of Lawrence and Mayor Kendrys Vasquez commissioned Greater Lawrence Technical School to create a COVID-19 vaccination-themed sculpture for the City, to remind the community of its fight against the virus and about the critical role vaccination plays in winning that fight.
The sculpture is metal, in a heart shape with Plexiglas slats; the slats will represent the percentage of the Lawrence community fully vaccinated against COVID-19.
Metal Fabrication Instructor Stephanie DiCecca sketched the design for the sculpture. About 10 juniors in the Metal Fabrication program began working alongside instructors in May. Students referred to Instructor DiCecca’s design, utilizing their skills and knowledge to bring her concept to life.
Students and staff finished the sculpture on June 16.
“We are still on the mission of getting residents vaccinated for our collective health and safety. We are thankful to work with Greater Lawrence Technical School on this project that highlights the community’s progress in this fight,” Mayor Vasquez said. “This sculpture serves as a reminder for residents to encourage their family, friends and neighbors to get vaccinated. It’s an honor for us to have worked with the students on a design that embodies the amount of ‘heart’ that we are all putting into this work.”
“Thank you to Mayor Vasquez and the City of Lawrence for allowing us to create this work of art and showcase the skills of Greater Lawrence Tech students,” Superintendent Lavoie said. “And thank you Stephanie for her wonderful design, to our instructors for their leadership. Our students have created art with a purpose and a message, one the entire Greater Lawrence can be proud of.”
