Earlier this month, Lawrence Mayor Daniel Rivera visited Greater Lawrence Technical School to check in with students, staff and administration and learn about new programming.
Superintendent John Lavoie met with Mayor Rivera — giving him the full tour of some exciting new areas of study in the works and stopping in to say hello to students in their technical area of study.
This year, GLTS launched its STEAM Innovation and Horticulture and Landscape Program programs.
“We’re always excited to be able to show off all the amazing work going on at GLTS,” Superintendent Lavoie said. “Mayor Rivera has always been a great partner to GLTS, so we were thrilled to give him an early look into our new STEAM Innovation Labs and Horticulture program.”
The Science Technology Engineering Arts Math (STEAM) Innovation Program, blends the mind of a scientist or technologist with that of an artist or designer, enabling students to explore the captivating area where STEM, the Arts, and the future intersect.
During the Mayor’s visit, Superintendent Lavoie showcased each area of the program, even stopping by an area under construction. Plumbing students who are assisting with the project were able to give the Mayor a firsthand look into what will soon be another state-of-the art lab.
Students in Horticulture will focus on creating environmental stewards who are well versed in the ecological, organic and responsible approaches to the design, construction and care of all types of landscapes. Those who opt to proceed with this technical pathway will leave prepared to attend a two or four year college, or gain employment in the field.
